The Montreal Wood Conference 2025 - Reflections on a Valuable Event

The Montreal Wood Conference, held on April 9th, proved to be a premier event, bringing together sawmills, engineers, developers, and manufacturers, all united by a shared passion for lumber. It served as a vital platform for exploring the latest changes in the industry as well as the shifting economic landscape.

Key Highlights from the Conference:

  • Mr. Benjamin Tal of CIBC Capital Markets is an annual delight at this event. His presenation this year was strictly focused on the tariff war and how it impacts us all. Ontario and Quebec, metals, transportation equipment are among the most impacted provinces and sectors. Deep uncertainty in the markets causing a surge in gold prices; and an overall decrease in job quality has caused a decrease in bargaining power among job seekers. Job seekers are more likely to moonlight rather than switch jobs now compared to 2020.

  • Mr. Shai Dubey of Queen's University discussed the importance of negotiating skills and why "The Art of the Deal" shouldn't really focus on who walks away the winner. The most important takeaway is that everyone's needs are met, relationships are stronger, and amicable compromises are made to make the deal happen. When negotiating, listen 63% of the time and ask 2.5 times as many questions as your client.

  • Mr. Hamir Patel of CIBC Capital Markets provided insite on the effects of tariffs on the housing market and, in consequence, the lumber market.

  • Mr. Jon Montgomery was a remarkable keynote speaker. He shared his inspirational journey to Olympic gold medal status, and host of The Amazing Race Canada.

  • The networking opportunities were also invaluable. We connected with numerous professionals, exchanged ideas, and established promising new partnerships.

In Conclusion:

The Montreal Wood Conference 2025 was a resounding success, providing a crucial platform for the lumber industry and market. The knowledge shared, the connections made, and the inspiration gained will undoubtedly contribute to the continued growth and innovation of this industry. We're so happy to have particiapted this year.
